The Importance of Diversity in Communication Today Free Essays

The world we live in is a world composed of constant changes and differences among people. History would tell us how far the age of humanity has stretched—from the period of cave men, to the age of land explorations, to Renaissance, up to the age of industrialization, and now, the period of globalization. Still, there are available tools and ways to settle each difference among people. We will write a custom essay sample on The Importance of Diversity in Communication Today or any similar topic only for you Order Now One of the most useful and most effective ways to do this is through communication. Communication helps greatly in the filling of gaps among people who have differences in views, culture, and contexts (Sproule, p. 13). Its diverse nature has proven to be playing a major role in the past. For example, during the time of the early cave men, communication was done non-verbally. It indicates the simplicity of life during the said period. It was very different during the Industrialization Age when other tools for communication were invented. The appearance of telephones and early computers made a great impact in the area of communication. These changes suggest that communication adapts with time and the needs of the people during that time. In this current period though, what is the role and importance of diversity in communication in a globalized world? Diversity among cultures is one thing that plays a major role in communication today. With the differences in their views, tradition, and religion, people from different cultures often clash with each other. In communication, it should be noted that cultural diversity is one of the crucial and important aspects we should consider when communicating (Bovà ©e, p. 26). For example, today that we are in the world of capitalism, business communication plays a vital role for the success of companies and industries. When dealing with business partners and businessmen from a different race and culture, it is important that we knows how to communicate with them with background and knowledge of their culture (Schirato, p. 87). For example, the Japanese are known to be patient and values formality when dealing with their businesses as compared to other Western ones who are more direct, straightforward, and informal. Diversity in the products of technology also gives an impact to communication nowadays. Because of the invention of the Internet, written, verbal, and non- verbal communication are no longer limited. DuPont, p. 66). Written communication now changes from the way it used to be. For example, mails today no longer require long days or hours of waiting to be received. Instant messaging, just as chat and e-mails, are rampant today and helps in the fast sending and receiving of messages. The ways on how to communicate verbally also change with the use of the Internet. Before verbal exchange of messages can only happen personally. But now, video conferencing, wherein two people could talk to each other even if they are in two different location, is possible. Major changes in the area of non- verbal communication are also taking place. Other products of technological advancements add to the range of diversity communication has. The diversity in the products of technology helps communication to be faster, powerful, and effective. Although there are negative issues regarding online communication, we could not still hide the big impact technology has made to change the way we communicate. In addition, cultural diversity for others is a barrier for effective communication. However, the diversity helps in for further understanding and growth of the people. Free Essays on Romero Movie

In the movie â€Å"Romero† the peoples right to worship God is violently taken away from them. This can be seen when Romero is elected archbishop of El Salvador and is attending a fancy party in his honor. While this is happening, a priest, and friend of Romero, is giving the sacrament of Christ to his people in the center of their town. While the people receive the sacrament music is playing and people are happy and rejoicing. This joyous celebration is soon silenced by an army of soldiers who come into the town to bring an end to church services. The people, helpless and unarmed, run in panic as the soldiers open fire upon them. Another violation of the worship of God can be seen when Romero arrives at a church that has been turned into an army barracks. Romero walks in to the church and announces to the soldiers that he has come to remove the Blessed Sacrament of Christ. A hotheaded soldier responds to Romero’s request by unloading a round of bullets into the tabernacle, which shatters the crucifix hanging above the altar. Romero stands astonished and unbelieving by the utter desecration that the soldier has done, and then leaves. Romero pauses outside the church where a crowd has gathered wanting to attend church, but Romero is unsure what he will do next. Suddenly, Romero collects the courage to face the evil within the church, and he turns around and enters the church. Romero brushes past the hotheaded soldier and kneels to gather the consecrated wafers with shaky hands. The soldier fires another round above Romero's head. Not stopped by the gunfire, Romero continues to gather the wafers. The soldier then shoves Romero with his boot and throws Romero out of the church. But Romero isn't quite finished. He returns yet again, this time to restore the church to its rightful owner, the people. As Romero walks with the people towards the church, the soldiers try to scare the people with their guns. Oxford Referencing †Citing a Book

Oxford Referencing – Citing a Book Oxford Referencing – Citing a Book You need two things when citing a book in the Oxford referencing system: a footnote citation and an entry in a bibliography. The exact format for this can vary, so make sure to check your style guide if you have one. But if all you need is a clear, simple way of referencing sources in your written work, then you can follow our guidelines below next time you cite a book. Citing a Book in Footnotes To cite a book, you’ll first need to add a superscript number in the main text: Citations usually go after end punctuation, like this.1 These superscript numbers point to footnotes at the bottom of a page. This is where you provide source information. And the first time you cite a book, you will need to use the following format: n. Author Initial(s). Surname, Book Title, publisher, place of publication, year, page number(s). The page numbers here refer to the specific section cited. Using this format, then, you should end up with a footnote that looks something like this: 1. H. Kane, Discovering Rome, Penguin Roundhouse, London, 2002, p. 10. When referencing a book with two or three authors, meanwhile, use â€Å"† to separate the last two: 2. J. Jones, L. Larkin W. Ellis, How to Beat the System, Harper Collins, New York, 2004, p. 16. And if a book has four or more authors, use â€Å"et al.†   Ã¢â‚¬â€œ meaning â€Å"and others† – after the first named author rather than writing each author name out in full: 3. I. King et al., The Human Mind, Continuum, London, 2010, p. 3. After citing a book for the first time, you can use a shorter footnote format for repeat citations. We will look at how this works below. Repeat Citations: Latin Abbreviations Most versions of Oxford referencing use a set of Latin abbreviations for repeat citations. Typically, this includes the following: Ibid. (meaning â€Å"in the same place†). You can use this when citing a source more than once in a row. If you’re citing a different page number, remember to include this in the citation. Loc. cit. (short for loco citato, or â€Å"in the place cited†). You can use this alongside the author’s surname for non-consecutive citations of the same page of a source. If you have cited more than one work by that author, you may also need to include a shortened title. Op. cit. (short for opere citato, meaning â€Å"in the work cited†). Similar to â€Å"loc. cit.† but used when citing a different page of a previously cited work. We can see how this works in practice with the repeat citations below: 4. P. Walker, London Fields: A Guide for the Uninitiated, Penguin Roundhouse, London, 2002, p. 10. 5. Ibid., p. 13. 6. T. Williams, Going the Distance, Harper Collins, New York, 2010, p. 34. 7. Walker, op. cit., p. 16. Here, the Walker source is cited in footnotes 4, 5 and 7. We use â€Å"ibid.† for footnote five as it comes immediately after the initial citation, but we give a new page number because we’re citing a different part of the book. And in footnote 7 we use â€Å"op. cit.† because we’re citing a different part of the Walker book after citing a different source, making it a non-consecutive citation. Other Shortened Citations If your version of Oxford referencing does not use the Latin abbreviations above, you will still need to shorten repeat citations. Usually, this means citing just the author’s surname and a page number. If you are citing more than one source by the same author, however, you should also provide a shortened version of the book’s title in repeat citations. For instance: 4. P. Walker, London Fields: A Guide for the Uninitiated, Penguin Roundhouse, London, 2002, p. 10. 5. T. Williams, Going the Distance, Harper Collins, New York, 2010, p. 34. 6. P. Walker, Urban Rambling, Penguin Roundhouse, London, 2010, p. 211. 7. Walker, London Fields, p. 10. 8. Williams, p. 35. Here, we have two sources by Walker and one by Williams. As such, when we cite London Fields a second time, we include the shortened title to show which source we’re referencing. But when we cite Williams for a second time in footnote 8, we only give his surname and a page number. The Reference List Finally, with Oxford referencing, every source you cite in the main text should also appear in a reference list. The format for a book here is similar to the first footnote except for two things: You should give the author’s surname before the initial. This is so you can list the sources in your document alphabetically by author surname. You do not need to give page numbers for a book in the reference list. As such, the basic format for a book in an Oxford reference list is: Surname, Initial(s), Book Title, publisher, place of publication, year. And in practice, this would look something like this: Kane, H., Discovering Rome, Penguin Roundhouse, London, 2002.

Criminal Conviction Rate in England Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Criminal Conviction Rate in England - Essay Example ter than 90% conviction rate and 85% negotiated pleas, it would appear that the English judicial system delivers justice at an acceptably speedy rate and therefore has fewer number of detainees on remand awaiting trial for an inordinate number of years. However, the judicial process still takes considerable time and questions arising over the denial of the right to trial within a reasonable time remain relevant. Strong criticisms on how the British government handles terrorism-related cases have been expressed in more recent times. For instance, in 2004, the British House of Lords took exception to the way the government took inordinately long periods of time to deal with terrorism cases2. According to data released by the Ministry of Justice, there has been a general decline in the rate of convictions over the past decade. This is deducible from figure1, which is a graphical representation of the conviction rate in England and Wales for the decade between 2002 and 2012. Figure 1 demonstrates that convictions were low in 2002 but dramatically increased to peak in 2004. Nonetheless, from 2004 to 2012 the convictions continued to decrease with a slight increase between 2008 and 2009 during the global financial crisis, but nevertheless continued on a downward trajectory thereafter, reaching the bottom at roughly 1.2 million convictions in 2012. Based on the figures delineated in Table 1, it appears that there was a statistically significant decline in the number of persons coming into contact with the judicial system for the years 2011 and 2012. These figures include prosecuted cases and control for cases that were settled out-of-court. For 2011, 2.03 persons came into contact with the judicial system which is 8.4% higher than the numbers for the year 2012. These statistics were drawn-off the 13 % fall in out of court settlements from 444,441 persons to 386, 95756, as well as the 7.1 % downfall from 1,583,373 to 1,471, 304 in the defendants proceeding to court

Content Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Content Analysis - Essay Example The employees who had worked for more than five years were pretty satisfied with the hospital as a workplace. However, the young and ambitious crowd, which had been there for a short period was not very happy with the workplace, and hardly found it exciting. Unanimously, the answer was the cleanliness in the hospital and the professional attitude of everyone around. Some respondents from housekeeping said they liked the work because unlike hotels, where guests could check in and check out at any time of the day, there were not many patients checking out at odd hours in this workplace. Instead, most of them checked out in the late mornings. A few were happy about the pay, while a few part-timers were not so happy with it. The majority felt that there was inflexibility in the job roles and they should be given a chance to rotate and have a stint in other departments too. The distance between the carpark and the building was another grouse. Most of them felt that the parking should have been closer to the place of work. Some felt that the doctors were high handed in their behaviour towards them. Most of them felt that they would have been able to perform better if they had been able to interact with the higher management and not just their immediate seniors. A few new comers (most probably the younger lot) seemed not to be able to fit in their roles and were complaining about their colleagues and superiors. Most of them spoke about the sad atmosphere and the dull environment in the canteen. Q4. If you were the boss, what would you change to make it better Each had a different answer to this question. While one wanted to have better tools and equipment for working, another one wanted to raise the pay for evening shift workers. A few wanted to sack their bosses, while one wanted a four-day week. Another suggestion was of a rotation of jobs. Someone suggested brighter colours for the canteen furniture and also provision for playing music. Another respondent wanted to change the colour of the uniforms. Some wanted to give the employees a choice for the shifts, if they were the boss. One of the respondents wanted to keep training programmes for fresh recruits. Q5. Do you have anything else to say None of them had anything much to say. Only one respondent said that he wished he had a complete day off and not be called on weekends too sometimes. Findings and Conclusions Going through the transcript, one can make out that while each of the employees, past and present, appreciated the cleanliness and professionalism in the hospital, not many of them were actually motivated to continue working there. The attitude of their superiors, the sad atmosphere around the place, the cold furniture in the canteen and the distance from the parking lot put them off. It seems many of them wanted to have more flexibility in their roles and

Class Overall, class was enjoyable. I learned many new things about the game of golf. The discussions of the history of the game and of the layout of the course allowed me to, in the period of one day, create a greater appreciation and understanding of the game of golf. I was interested and learned much about the history and development of golf and how certain ecological aspects of the course affect game play. Assigned Readings   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many of Updike’s articles were easy for me to relate to. Updike seems to me to be a very intent golfer who is very easily distracted and easily frustrated. He seems to love the game but finds it difficult to get good now that he is aging.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I especially like the way he writes the novel. Although at times he is difficult to follow, his wording makes the story interesting. My favorite aspect of the novel is the descriptive scenes he gives and how he develops them into extremely problematic situations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  From the book, my favorite section is the â€Å"Golf Dreams† section. This is because of several reasons. Firstly, as I have mentioned, I like his style and descriptiveness of the scene. I also find it easy to relate to his situation where he makes everything seem much more difficult than it really is. Overall I enjoyed the first readings. Day 2 (May 14, 2002) Class   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Today was a fairly relaxed class. Since I knew most of what was discussed, time seemed to pass quickly. The discussion over Golf Dreams was interesting and it caused me to think about the readings more than I had already done. Assigned Readings   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The new Updike readings were not as interesting to me a the first readings were. I liked â€Å"The Pro† but that was about it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I noticed that his disgust with the way he was playing the game slowly depreciated and that he became more relaxed. He eventually makes himself a hypocrite in the fact that he just plays the game for fun and that he eventually accepts the gimmes and similar things he did not usually do. The Game of Golf   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I thought that since this is a journal about golf it wouldn’t hurt to write about golf. Today I shot a 69 at our golf match. The worst part is I cheated. I told my opponent that I did cheat so that he could disqualify me but he didn’t believe me. The truth is I realized that golf really isn’t that important and that it is only fun when I really want to go to the course and play.

Magazine Article: Romeo and Juliet Essay

Aya Temimi, does this name ring a bell ? Of course ! The most amazing director of all time, billions of fans and directed one of the most famous love stories: The Titanic. Aya Temimi has already sold out, not a million but a BILLION copies of The Titanic. Not only that was a highlight in her amazing career but also being the best director at such a young age (20 years) is very rare, especially, in this new generation. Who would have thought ? That this small girl from the smallest country on Earth would become THIS big? (not me) but a lesson is learned: don’t judge a book by it’s cover or in this case (by it’s surrounding). The amazing Aya took a break for a couple of years, but now she’s back and better than ever. She is willing to win our hearts back by redirecting the famous romantic movie: Romeo&Juliet, we will experience it on whole different level, with new actors and a new director (Aya Temimi). The movie is expected in June 2013, a bit too much wai ting for us but you know what they say: haste makes waste, so we have to hold our horses (even though we can’t). Readers, pick up your ears (or may I say eyes?) because we have a very exclusive interview with the one and only: Aya Temimi ! Hello love, we’ve heard everything about your new movie coming out and we, seriously, can’t wait ! So, would you like to tell us who’s lucky enough to cast the roll of Romeo and why you chose him? Good morning darling, the lucky young man has to be Justin Bieber (of course). I chose him because he has the whole package: the personality, the looks, the fame and the fans and that can work in our advance. Justin is a very wise young man who’s head over heels in love with his beautiful girlfriend (Selena Gomez, who by the way will play the role of Juliet) , that’s really an icing on the cake because Justin wouldn’t have to â€Å"act† in love and it will look more realistic. Justin is also down to earth and really passionate about his music, and Romeo is also passionate but in this case not about music, but about love. Another treat that they both have in common is the fearlessness, they aren’t afraid to do what they want and what they love. Justin isn’t afraid to get critic on what he does, because it wouldn’t stop him from doing it and that’s something that many people admire. As you (obviously) already have seen on the news : Bieber is a hopeless romantic just as Romeo, I mean, seriously, renting the whole strapless center to watch The Titanic with his lovely girlfriend? Awesome. Wow, that’s quiet an explanation you gave. So, you already spilled the secret about who’s gonna play Juliet. But, my question for you this time is; why did you chose her? First of all, Selena is a very determined and strong women who loves Justin to death and she did go through a painful period, full of heartbreaking comments and rumors but the love she has for Justin conquers them all. She also showed her loyalty just as Juliet by staying with him even though he was rumored to be the father of the child of Maria Yeater (a fan of Justin) , and even when people really doubted them to last due to the age difference between Justin (18) and Selena (20) (big deal) they are still going strong. Juliet’s love for Romeo was infinite and she would (literally) take the bullet for him, It’s actually just how Selena is loyal towards Justin but then in a more dramatic and difficult way. Oh I think they will be going strong for a long time, without a doubt. But sweetheart, we are really eager to know who’s going to play the courageous Mercutio ? Well, that was a difficult choice, it took me a whole lifetime to chose that one. As we all know Mercutio wasn’t just a very loyal and courageous friend, he was more than that. He was the brother Romeo never had, so I needed someone really close to Romeo, in this case( Justin ), to play the role. That has a reason, because Justin needed to experience the pain Romeo was feeling when his best friend was lying lifeless and vulnerable on the ground while Romeo was watching him bleed to death, believe me, that wasn’t just a slap on the wrist. To cut a long story short; we needed someone who was emotionally involved with Justin. Ryan Butler, Justin’s brother from another mother. He’s a very charismatic young fella who has the ladies dropping themselves at his feet (he sure loves that), he loves the attention and is very energetic, just as Mercutio he has a very strong bond with Justin and would do anything for him. Ryan is really fun-loving, he likes to go out a nd just have the time of his life but he can be very serious and protective when it comes down to Justin. The funny part is that he has the same personality as Mercutio, he’s one of those persons that can joke and make you laugh all the time even if he’s in serious pain or in a wrong situation and that, perfectly, resembles Mercutio. You talk so passionate about your characters, it must have taken a while before making a definite choice because it sure doesn’t sound as a piece of cake. Love, let’s continue: who’s playing the lovely Nurse? And why? The Nurse is played by someone who’s very special to me, the apple to my eye: my lovely mother. It did take a little effort but after a few crocodile tears and my dramatic begs, I really had to bend over backwards, but it was worth it. I chose my mom because I believe that no one would play the role of The Nurse better than a mother. The Nurse represented someone who’s very talkative and caring, surprisingly, so is my mom. I could go on and tell a billion things about my lovely mother, but she does resemble The Nurse: because The Nurse was there for Juliet when she wanted to vent to someone about her love life , just like a mother should be (shame on you, Lady Capulet). She helped her through everything: giving her advice, marrying to Romeo, sneak out, cover up for her and simply support her and didn’t make her feel like she’s on her own. Wow, you do have a way with words ! So, lets move one to the last person: Benvolio. Who’s going to play his character? And why? Hmmpff, I feel like a radio, repeating the same songs. Thank you, Benvolio is going to be played by (I have to cross my fingers on this one) my dad. My dad is an amazing person and, obviously, father. He’s really peaceful and doesn’t like fights or any violence but he does know how to have fun, he’s a real fuddy duddy. My dad is a very loyal family man and would do everything to keep his family together and live in a peaceful atmosphere. He’s the type of person who keeps his chin up no matter what situation he’s in, that’s why he’s good at giving advice and that also resembles one of Benvolio’s treats. Benvolio also gave Romeo advice to keep looking at other women and forget about Rosaline, he showed Romeo that there are plenty fish in the sea. Another treat of my dad is that he’s very thoughtful, unfortunately, sometimes he thinks too much but after all he’s a men who’s practical: he doesn’t just say, he does. One other similarity of my dad and Benvolio is that they both are, clearly, honest as you might know Benvolio was utterly honest when he was asked by the Prince to explain what happened that day between Romeo, Tybalt and Mercutio. You keep amazing me, Aya ! Unfortunately, this interview has come to an end but before we say goodbye, I would like to ask if you wanted to add anything? First of all, thank you for everything, I really liked the interview and I would surely do it all over again (if I had time). Most important is that I wanted you to know why I chose those characters who never, actually, acted before. I chose specifically those persons because I have faith in them, I believe that they would amaze the public because each one of them has something, clearly, doozy. The other reason is because I wanted them to experience something new, something they would have to work hard (harder than they do) for and I wanted them to believe that a house divided against Itself can not stand, that they needed to work together and learn from each other to work this out. After all they were all in the same boat , they will all face the same things, the same critics that back seat drivers will have. To conclude everything: we had the time of our lifes, we nearly died laughing at each other after filming the same scenes countless times over and over again and the most import ant thing is that at the end of this roller coaster, we became one big family. That was deep, girlie ! I can see that it came deep from your heart, I wish you the best and I will, surely, see you ! Elvis left the building, everyone ! To the last: Romeo&Juliet is coming out in June 2013 ! Specific data will be announced on the 15th of May.

The Ethical Case Of The Doctor - 1835 Words

A doctor chose to tell her patient, Sarah who was suffering from multiple myeloma part of the information that he thought was welcoming to the patient. The doctor told the patient that 50% of the patients treated of this illness can survive while the other 50% die within 2 or 3years of ailment. However, he did not disclose to Sarah that 10% percent of the survivors are likely to be exposed to leukemia in the next 20 years, a condition that is resistant to treatment. The doctor has fears that he might alarm her chances for taking treatment and hence limit her chances for future survival. Even though the research is not conclusive on the possibilities of attracting leukemia after 20 years, he thinks it is not morally right to disclose the risks to the patients. Therefore, the doctor is faced with ethical issues of autonomy, honesty, disclosure, good virtue, integrity, moral responsibility and practical wisdom. This is the ethical case that I will discuss and analyze in this essay. Introduction The ethical issue presented here is a real case on ethical study that most of the medical professionals face during their work .It is an ideal case that characterizes the present day society given that the doctors have to make a decision regarding the available options. The fact that the patient, Sarah, has a deadly disease and any wrong decision will complicate her situation, the decision will be made based on the information that the doctor will provide her.
